MARKET REPORT – NOV. 10TH, 2017

Much to talk about today.

First, of course, my favourite subject – weather!  There isn’t much in the way of weather issues in play at this moment.  A mini-cold wave did in all but the most resistant of local crops, but expect to still see local dandelion, kale and a few others until harvesting is just plain not fun.  Superb fall weather has blessed the coastal California growing areas like Salinas, Watsonville etc. where green veg and berry harvests have all but wrapped up, but perfect conditions are blessing winter fields in Oxnard.  (That’s the small production area right on the coast, just north of Los Angeles.)

MARKET REPORT – SEPT 16TH, 2016

OK, Avo’s are now arriving Saturday.

There was as mentioned previously a 5 day Hurricane based harvesting gap of 5 days – avocados aren’t harvested in the rain.  Then there was a surge of several hundred more trucks every day heading north as markets caught up.  What we forgot to think about was big border delays as those trucks moved into the U.S., hence another 1 day delay.  Unfortunately there is another hurricane brewing (currently not yet a tropical storm) in the same place, off the coast of Acapulco, and it’s outer rain bands are skimming over Michoacan.  We’re hoping this one stays out to sea and doesn’t affect Mexico the way the last one did.

MARKET REPORT – AUG. 5TH 2016

Here is a quick rundown for you

Apples:  We were being warned of a potential early harvest of Gala for this weekend but the weather cooled off quite a bit over the last week, and there is cool rainy weather forecast for the Interior for the next 5 days.  Galas have to be picked several times and the first picks are fairly small, so we will presume there is no rush to get them off and all resources are closing off the peach harvests instead.

HOT SHOTS, MAR. 27TH, 2016

Dear Ones,

It’s Spring and Spring makes me think about Love.  Not love like ewey gooey romance love, but about Good Love, like seeds breaking open in the dirt Love, like lil baby animals rushing into the world Love, like the smell of sticky poplar buds riding the chilly but not cold morning breeze Love.  My friend Tess who stays with me for about one week a month and is like a sister to me came into my room this week where I was reading myself to sleep.  She said, “Are you sleeping.”
