Produce Update-January 14 2015
Stefan: Tomatoes and cucumbers are back on track and quality is superb. Zucchini is still missing in action for the most part so grab it when you can as it’s selling out as fast as it comes in. Beans from Nature’s Nectar are just starting up now. The Nature’s Nectar farms got hit pretty hard by the hurricane in the Baja last year and they had to rebuild many of their greenhouses to withstand stronger winds just in case the unexpected happens again. Harkers are still packing most varieties of apples with the one big exception being Gala apples. This has been the fastest out date for BC gala in recent memory. We still have a strong supply of Washington C/A pears including all varieties aside from the Bartlett. A few hot peppers are trickling back in from Covilli and Del Cabo. This should improve considerably over the coming weeks.Annie: Crops in SE California and northern Mexico are recovering from the recent frost, and now there is another frost expected at the end of next week. Harvest continues, but we are seeing severe shortages on salad mixes and green onions, and continued gapping butter lettuces and baby broccoli. We will have strong supply on Red, Green and Romaine, celery, and broccoli out of Mexico, with quality improving every week. Blackberries will be back in stock Thursday, and Pineapple gaps have ended. Strawberries are here and as lovely as you could imagine, Chilean Blueberries are crisp and sweet, Papayas are out for a few days.Jodi: After a slow start, we’re starting to see more fun citrus listings trickle in! New this week are daisy’s (a seeded tasty little tangerine) from Corona College Heights, minneolas from CCH and Rucker as well, Seville oranges will be in early next week and we’ll see some yummy treats from Ojai soon too! We got our last shipment of Across the Creek spuds for the season and we’ll slowly start moving east and then to the US for supplies. We try to finish off the local, then Canadian listings before moving into US product.
