Andersen Organics

Denise and Brian Andersen, along with their two daughters, farm in the beautiful Columbia Basin, near Othello Washington. Being born and raised on a farm “infused farming in their blood,” so they began farming in 1984, only four years after graduating from high school. Working with the land and considering the value of soil health and productivity lead to the Andersen’s desire to become certified organic.“Organic farming has become a rewarding way to farm. We enjoy the challenge of producing a healthy crop…it never ceases to amaze us just how good a crop can be when it is grown in healthy soil.” Because being stewards of the land is an integral part of the Andersen Family’s farming philosophy, water conservation is a high priority. One way they conserve this valuable natural resource is by using drip irrigation. During harvest time, instead of throwing out the used drip tape, the Andersen’s retrieve and recycle it. Brian says, “This is an enormous task, but one that we feel is worth the effort. Learning is a daily process when your farming partner is Mother Nature.”The Andersen family strives to grow and ship the highest quality product. One of the ways they do this is by applying composted manures months before planting. By doing this, they are planting their onions into very healthy soil. Their label statement is “GROWN HEALTHIER” and it truly is.

Coke Farm

In 1981, a conventional farmer bet Dale Coke that he couldn’t grow organic strawberries. He has now been growing organic fruits and vegetables in Northern California for more than two decades. With a strong commitment to sustainability and good agricultural practices, Coke Farm prides itself in the quality produce, customer satisfaction, and the year-round employment that it provides to the local community. The planting and harvesting of dozens of crop varieties, seed crops, and the growing of specialty produce are a few of the examples of what Coke Farm does.

Originally started as a small planting of strawberries and snow peas, Coke Farm has evolved to a full-scale vegetable farm with over fifty crop varieties harvested each year. From Amaranth to Zucchini, Coke Farm’s produce can be found in local markets, renowned restaurants, and specialty stores throughout North America. Christine, Dale’s partner, focuses on helping smaller local farms with limited production sell their crops commercially, bringing a variety of rare West Coast specialties into Canada.

Today, in addition to growing and shipping their own produce, Coke Farm also cools, stores, and ships for several local organic farms.

Creekside Organics

Creekside Organics, Inc. is a licensed commission merchant specializing in exclusively marketing organic produce. Creekside is committed to aiding serious, well-established organic farmers bring their produce to market. Located in Bakersfield, CA, Creekside markets produce grown in the San Joaquin, Coachella and Salinas Valleys of California.

In 1999, Brenda began marketing organic fruits and vegetables for Pavich Family Farms.  A couple years later Brenda left Pavich Family Farms and brought with her a few of the vegetable growers that Pavich was no longer able to service and began working with Sierra Heights Marketing, now known as Homegrown Organic Farms. It was during her time working for Pavich Family Farms and Homegrown Organic Farms that Brenda began to develop relationships with organic farmers, wholesalers and retailers. After years of working for these companies, Brenda realized she could better fulfill the needs of organic farmers and her growing family by starting her own company. It was with this principle in mind that she and her business partner, Dennis Maul, created Creekside Organics, Inc. in the spring of 2011.  Creekside Organics, Inc. represents organic produce growers in the marketplace, facilitating the sales of organic produce between the farm and retailers, wholesalers and distributors, as a licensed commission merchant.

Jacobs Farm – Del Cabo Organic

Having already created Jacobs Farm, a successful organic farming operation, and with a knack for developing niche markets, longtime organic farmers Larry Jacobs and Sandra Belin were confident in their vision for their next venture. In 1985, they encountered a community of struggling, subsistence-level farmers in Mexico, and the Del Cabo cooperative was conceived.

Forstbauer Family Farms

Forstbauer Farm is a large Certified Organic vegetable producer, supplying three wholesalers with beets, sugar pumpkins, cucumbers, zucchini, beans, chard and a wide variety of other vegetables. Mary and her husband Hans have managed to run it and also raise twelve children, an accomplishment in and of itself.

The farm is certified organic with the Biodynamic Association of BC, which Mary is very involved with. She is also the driving force behind the BC Certified Organic check mark logo. The check mark is used by farms that are certified by a BC certifying body as a way of distinguishing homegrown produce on store shelves.

If that wasn’t enough, Mary also runs farm stands at several Lower Mainland farmers’ markets, bringing early spring greens and over-winter crops in June and maintaining the booth all the way into October with potatoes, pickling cukes, freshly dug carrots and bunch beets, rainbow chard and Asian greens.

Harker’s Organics

“That’s my brothers in our first fruit stand right here on this spot…that must have been in the 50’s…see they’ve got a tomato, an oversized cucumber and three apples for sale,” Bruce laughs at the now faded black and white blow up hanging in the rafters of their landmark roadside stand. Bruce and Kathy Harker were some of the first in the Similkameen Valley to turn to organics. The area is now the Organic Capital of Canada, with over 80 certified organic orchardists, ground-croppers and vineyards. Both the Harkers and their neighbors the Nugterens are conservation partners with The Land Conservancy, getting involved in restoring native vegetation and protecting their part of the incredible valley.

Bruce and Kathy lived in Vancouver until they moved to Cawston to work the land that Bruce’s grandparents had worked. Fourth generation Harkers are now busy harvesting heirloom tomatoes, hot peppers, specialty squash and bins and bins of apples and pears. The Harker’s coordinate the packing and handling of tree fruit for many other area farmers, who pack, market and ship to markets in Canada and the U.S. in their “Harvest Moon” boxes.

Troy and Sara Harker now run the day-to-day operations overseeing the farm and the wholesale operations. They work with many of the growers in the Similkameen and Okanagan insuring high quality and superb service with everything they do.
