Coke Farm

In 1981, a conventional farmer bet Dale Coke that he couldn’t grow organic strawberries. He has now been growing organic fruits and vegetables in Northern California for more than two decades. With a strong commitment to sustainability and good agricultural practices, Coke Farm prides itself in the quality produce, customer satisfaction, and the year-round employment that it provides to the local community. The planting and harvesting of dozens of crop varieties, seed crops, and the growing of specialty produce are a few of the examples of what Coke Farm does.

Originally started as a small planting of strawberries and snow peas, Coke Farm has evolved to a full-scale vegetable farm with over fifty crop varieties harvested each year. From Amaranth to Zucchini, Coke Farm’s produce can be found in local markets, renowned restaurants, and specialty stores throughout North America. Christine, Dale’s partner, focuses on helping smaller local farms with limited production sell their crops commercially, bringing a variety of rare West Coast specialties into Canada.

Today, in addition to growing and shipping their own produce, Coke Farm also cools, stores, and ships for several local organic farms.

Jacobs Farm – Del Cabo Organic

Having already created Jacobs Farm, a successful organic farming operation, and with a knack for developing niche markets, longtime organic farmers Larry Jacobs and Sandra Belin were confident in their vision for their next venture. In 1985, they encountered a community of struggling, subsistence-level farmers in Mexico, and the Del Cabo cooperative was conceived.

Heirloom Gardens

In a lush green valley flooded with cool coastal breezes, Grant Brians specializes in growing heirloom varietals. Harvested young, his tender baby greens offer tons of flavor and directly reflect the tasty benefits of organic agriculture. His farm was the second to be certified in California (1976) and the first to be certified in the Santa Clara Valley. Today he grows over 100 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables.

All of Grant’s plants are open pollinated, inter-cropped (planted together) and harvested by hand. His full time, year-round staff takes exceptional care of each varietal. The results are well appreciated—his harvest has long been sought after by California chefs and can be found on plates in many of the best restaurants in the Bay Area.

Lakeside Organic Gardens

The Peixoto family began farming in the Pajaro Valley of California in the late 1800’s and perfected conventional growing throughout the 1900’s. As their passions for harvesting the riches of the soil grew and evolved, the family made a committed decision to convert all their farms to 100% organic. Lakeside Organic Gardens was launched by Dick Peixoto and his extended family in 1996. Dick first converted the farm that he and his brother, Jim, had farmed beans on so many years earlier when Dick was in high school. The 55-acre ranch includes a lake, a white farmhouse and an old-fashioned water tower with a windmill on top. This location became the inspiration for the Lakeside Organic Gardens logo, which includes this very farmhouse and water tower amidst the rolling hills. Once Dick got the “bug” for organic farming, things took off. Every year Lakeside Organic Gardens increases in acreage and commodities. Now they grow on approximately 1,200 certified organic acres in the Pajaro Valley. And in order to keep a steady supply for customers through the winter, they grow on approximately 600 certified organic acres in the Imperial Valley in California. Today, the company is still family-owned and operated with more than 10 family members on the Lakeside team!

Myers Farm

Bob Myers can remember, as a youngster, clearing the land for their family hobby farm in the Fraser Valley. 40 years later, he’s still at it, having just finished putting in yet another 10 acre field recently to go with the 60 acres he, his wife Marlene and son Brock, have expanded over the past 2 decades.

This family operation is the major provider of high quality lettuces, chard, kales, parsley, bok choi, spinach and many more leafy green crops to a handful of major retailers in Vancouver, plus six wholesalers who serve organic stores and supermarkets as far away as Manitoba and the Yukon.

Origin-O

Origin Organic Farms Inc. is the biggest organic greenhouse vegetable producer in North America. With 42 acres of Certified Organic greenhouse vegetable production in three of the sunniest spots on the lower mainland, they are able to produce approximately 15 million pounds of top quality tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers throughout the year, serving markets across North America. They fund advanced research and development programs with fertilizers, soil media and growing methods.

Origin-O maintains unique biological controls in their greenhouses, with nests for predatory wasps and bees, and an abundance of ladybugs. They even grow plants that aphids target to keep their ladybug population happy. Origin-O has also developed their own unique in-soil growing concept that uses a proprietary soil mix, augmented with compost from all their plant waste, and organic fertilizers processed from fully composted manures.

Siri & Sons

Joe and Alma Siri are continuing a tradition of growing high quality vegetables started by Antonio Siri, Joe’s great-grandfather, an Italian immigrant. The main crops on their 180 acre farm – bell peppers, celery, cucumbers, cilantro, radishes, spinach, green onions, and four types of lettuce – “have been perfected over generations.” Everything is grown organically using sustainable farming practices.

Joe and his crew packs radishes, spinach, broccoli, onions and lettuce bound for New Seasons Markets in reusable containers instead of the industry standard disposable waxed boxes as part of the Siri’s ongoing effort to create a sustainable distribution system. The program kept 8,000 wax boxes out of the waste stream thanks to a small grant from the Clackamas County Recycling department to OGC.

Siri and Sons supplies their sumptuous spinach to Portland area schools. The farm-school connection was forged in December, 2006 by Ecotrust, a Portland nonprofit organization.
