Coke Farm

In 1981, a conventional farmer bet Dale Coke that he couldn’t grow organic strawberries. He has now been growing organic fruits and vegetables in Northern California for more than two decades. With a strong commitment to sustainability and good agricultural practices, Coke Farm prides itself in the quality produce, customer satisfaction, and the year-round employment that it provides to the local community. The planting and harvesting of dozens of crop varieties, seed crops, and the growing of specialty produce are a few of the examples of what Coke Farm does.

Originally started as a small planting of strawberries and snow peas, Coke Farm has evolved to a full-scale vegetable farm with over fifty crop varieties harvested each year. From Amaranth to Zucchini, Coke Farm’s produce can be found in local markets, renowned restaurants, and specialty stores throughout North America. Christine, Dale’s partner, focuses on helping smaller local farms with limited production sell their crops commercially, bringing a variety of rare West Coast specialties into Canada.

Today, in addition to growing and shipping their own produce, Coke Farm also cools, stores, and ships for several local organic farms.

Glory B Farm

Glory B Farms is nestled in the Grays River Valley just 2 miles from the historic Grays River Covered Bridge. Tom Zimmerman, his wife April and their four daughters live on the family farm. Tom has been farming since his teens, when his family moved to the valley in 1976.

He started with a small patch behind the house and now has 17 acres of cropland on two different sites. One field is on the wet side of the west coast range and the other is in the rain shadow. Having land in these two separate microclimates allows Tom an extended harvest season, including some really good shoulder season kales and collards.

Washington State Certified Organic since 1993, Glory B was an early adopter of the standards, and is proud to hold cert #468, in a state now issuing certs numbered over 2000.

Heger Organic Farms

During the winter months, the Imperial Valley in Southern California grows an estimated 80% of the US’ vegetable supply. Heger Farms was the first organic farm in the region and today produces over 50 kinds of fruits and veggies. In the winter they grow a variety of winter vegetables including broccoli, cauliflower and greens. Their spring crop includes corn, melons, onions and peppers.

Longview Farms

Longview Farms is a progressive grower and shipper of quality fresh-cut daffodils and daffodil bulbs as well as a wide variety of Certified Organic fruit and vegetable crops grown in both the fields and greenhouses. We have expanded our food crop varieties and acreage each year to well over 60ha (150acres) of Certified Organic land in the rotation with further expansion planned for future seasons.

Our farm is located in the municipality of Central Saanich on Southern Vancouver Island which is on the west cost of British Columbia. This area hosts some of the most productive farmland in Canada.

Nash’s Organic Produce

Nash Huber is a visionary who farms on the North Olympic Peninsula in Washington state. Because of the unique micro climate in Sequim, his farm, Nash’s Organic Produce, grows vegetables year round. It is famous for exceptionally sweet and full-flavored carrots, though Scott Chichester, field production manager, is constantly toying with adventurous over-wintering crops.

In 1999, Huber collaborated with PCC Natural Markets in Seattle to save farmland. The PCC Farmland Trust was created, and the 80-acre Delta Farm adjacent to Nash’s operations was purchased. Nash and his crew have a 30-year lease on the land, and it has become one of the central hubs of the operation and an integral part of Nash’s efforts to train the next generation of organic farmers. Today, Nash is fortunate to have a strong crew of young managers who are committed to the future of the farm and organic agriculture, including organic seed production.

In addition to high-quality organic produce, the farm also grows several kinds of grain, including red and white wheat, triticale, rye, and barley for animal feed. The livestock includes about 100 hogs and 200 laying hens. These animals are humanely raised on pasture. The farm is certified organic and Salmon-Safe.

Ralphs Greenhouse

Ralph de Vries moved his family from the Netherlands in the 1950’s, when his son Ray was a toddler. After Ralph retired from the dairy business in the late 80’s, Ray took over managing the farm. Ray De Vries and Tim Terpstra (Ray’s lead hand) start their leeks in greenhouses, but if you look in Ray’s plastic frames in the summer and fall, you will find tomatillos, cilantro and other Mexican greens, as 30 employees raise fresh vegetables for their traditional lunches.

Ray’s leeks are stunning, with long thick stalks of white “meat” – the stuff that good winter soup is made of. Growing over 45 acres makes him the leek king, supplying customers all over North America through the winter, when all but a few southern States and virtually all of Canada are locked in winter’s grip.

Leeks keep Ray’s permanent work force occupied year-round. Carrots are another natural crop that grows superbly in the local soil. Ray and Tim Terpstra try new ideas every year to take advantage of their moderate climate and expand their long-season selection of vegetables for their regional customers.

Rodoni

Billy Rodoni’s family emigrated in the early 1900’s from Switzerland and Italy and settled in the Davenport area north of Santa Cruz, where they began farming and ranching. Now as third generation farmers with over 100 acres of land, certified organic by CCOF. Rodoni farms currently grows Brussels sprouts, leeks, artichokes, beets, peas, beans and pumpkins.

Mr. Rodoni always seemed to be in the forefront of change. He proved to be one of the great innovators of the Brussels sprouts industry. Prior to the 1950’s sprouts were sorted by hand off a table. Mr. Rodoni was the first to see a need for and develop a system for sorting and grading sprouts mechanically.

Siri & Sons

Joe and Alma Siri are continuing a tradition of growing high quality vegetables started by Antonio Siri, Joe’s great-grandfather, an Italian immigrant. The main crops on their 180 acre farm – bell peppers, celery, cucumbers, cilantro, radishes, spinach, green onions, and four types of lettuce – “have been perfected over generations.” Everything is grown organically using sustainable farming practices.

Joe and his crew packs radishes, spinach, broccoli, onions and lettuce bound for New Seasons Markets in reusable containers instead of the industry standard disposable waxed boxes as part of the Siri’s ongoing effort to create a sustainable distribution system. The program kept 8,000 wax boxes out of the waste stream thanks to a small grant from the Clackamas County Recycling department to OGC.

Siri and Sons supplies their sumptuous spinach to Portland area schools. The farm-school connection was forged in December, 2006 by Ecotrust, a Portland nonprofit organization.

Two Ee’S

Named for founders Emil and Elizabeth Kowalski, Two EE’s was first established as a dairy farm and fruit stand before WWII and ran steadily on a modest scale until it was purchased by the Schoen family in 1960. Ambitious young horticulturist Henk Schoen and his wife Jenny expanded the fruit and produce selection of the farm, raising nine children on the flourishing, expanding property.

Henk was naturally drawn to chemical-free farming as he watched early fertilizers and pesticides hit the market, many of them derivatives of toxic gases used in warfare. Since the 60’s he experimented with natural fertilizers and pest control on his own. Henk’s youngest son Mike, who holds a Horticulture Technician ceritificate and a diploma in Greenhouse Management, now manages organic growing on the farm. For him, organics are something he has known since childhood, an inspiring element of his family history and, with six children of his own, a promise of a bright and healthy future.

Wildflight Farm

Certified by NOOA, Louise and Hermann Bruns have built up their beautiful 20-acre farm on the banks of the Shuswap River for more than 10 years. As well as improving their house and production capacity, they have also built several greenhouses and an incredible winter storage facility including cold storage for winter radishes, cabbage, celeriac, beets and potatoes.

Hermann has developed rolling greenhouses that will help him get a head start on the season crop by crop without covering the entire field in floating row covers or building more fixed greenhouses. The Bruns also operate a CSA program with many loyal customers in the Mara and Armstrong areas.

The Bruns raise dogs, cats, chickens, goats, horses, cows, sheep, pigs, and peacocks! Though not part of the farm’s commercial production, the animals provide products for the farm families, neighbours and friends, and are another element of the enriching family farm lifestyle.
