Devine Organics

Devine Organics has its roots in Double D Farms, a conventional produce company which began as an almond grower in 1986. In the mid-1990s, Double D Farms started growing organics, reflecting the burgeoning interest of owners Don and Elvia Devine in producing organic products. Devine Organics was the natural result of this focus, and today the Devine Organics division of the company represents all of their organic commodities. With nearly 75 percent of the business now focused on organics, the new company identity reflects this shift. Today, Double D Farms is the brand representing their conventional produce. Whether conventionally or organically grown, you can trust that the highest standards for quality and safety are met to bring your family the freshest produce available.

Grupo Alta

Grupo Alta is a farm operation in the Sonora Desert near Hermosillo. The first word that comes to mind with Grupo Alta is impressive. Impressive for its size and for its ethics as an employer.

Initially restricted to table grapes, Grupo Alta is now growing a variety of crops, of which cucumbers, tomatoes, melons, watermelons, peaches, peppers. About 60% of their crops are grown organically (since 2011) and their objective is to reach the 100% in a few years. They sell in North America and Europe under the brands Divine Flavor and Heaven’s best.
They have 7 ranches, of which Campo Pozo Manuel and Campo La Cuesta that we visited.

Homegrown Organic Farms

Since 1988, John and Cindy France have represented over 40 family growers in California and Oregon, and take pride in providing small organic farmers with an easy avenue to market their crops. In total, their growers tend over 3,500 acres of organic fruits.

The growers of Homegrown see themselves not only as farmers but as stewards of the land, supporting the organics industry for the betterment of both consumers and the environment. They enjoy gathering insight into the opinions of their buyers, and their webpage contains a forum in which consumers are invited to share their personal reasons for buying organic.

Secrest Organics – Covert Farms

Some laughed when George Covert bought this desert-like piece of land back in 1959 – but he, his son, and eventually grandson have grown Covert Farms into a cornerstone in organic farming. The family name is well known across numerous provinces with restaurateurs and grocers alike.

After three generations of Coverts managing 130+ acres of ground crops, in 2014 Gene Covert (third generation farmer) turned his focus on winemaking and leased organic food growing to Secrest Organics at Covert Farms. Terry, owner of Secrest Organics, has been leading our organics production for a number of years; we consider Terry and his family to be part of the extended Covert family.

Today Covert Farms remains a leader in quality organic fruit and vegetable growing in the Okanagan through Secrest Organics – a major shipper of fresh field tomatoes, sweet onions, sweet corn, muskmelons and table grapes. Secrest Organics at Covert Farms supplies fruit stands and major wholesalers in western Canada, while continuing the tradition of offering fresh produce to the retail public. Our goal is to support a healthy community and help grow agri-tourism in the South Okanagan.

Sundance Farm

Trevor and Debbie Evans have been farming organically in the Similkameen Valley since 1978. One of the founding organic farming families in the area, Trevor recalls a time when his conventional neighbours laughed at the idea of growing without chemicals and pesticides. “They called us worm farmers,” he explains.

Now the Similkameen Valley is considered the organic growing capital of Canada, being home to more organic farmers than any other small region in the country. After more than a decade running a farmer run packing house, a few years ago Trevor and Debbie decided to step back to focus on their own Sundance Farms. Though tomatoes were their first love, Trevor and Debbie began growing tree fruits in the early 1980’s and now cultivate thirteen varieties of apples, six types of pears as well as Apricots and Peaches.

From his days helping found SOOPA, one of BC’s organic certifiers, to mentoring the folks who work the farm with him, Trevor and Debbie and their family are committed to fostering organics in their home province.
