Dear Ones,

Last Monday, I took my brother to vote for the first time in his life.  I had to go with him because I was his proof of address and while we were in line a young man of about 20 standing in front of us said, “are you here to vote?”  We were drenched head to toe from the Thanksgiving monsoon outdoors, looking like wet rats with rough day jobs and terrible taste in clothes and we were standing in a line at a polling station run by elections Canada, and so we said, “yes, we are here to vote.”

The kid was stoked!  He said it was his first time voting and it was Jasper’s first time voting and both of them were there, on a holiday, had come in through the rain to vote early, and to have their say counted.  What a beautiful thing.



On his way out I raised my palm to give young man we met in the lineup a high five after his first federal vote, and he raised his fist to fist pump and I didn’t notice and I slapped his fist.  Like a moron.  I then commenced feeling like an old woman.  I high fived a fist pump.  I knew I was uncool, my brother knew I was uncool, and I hung my head for a moment seriously grieving my inability to be awesome in public, mourning my slow uptake and also my soaking wet outfit.  My brother voted and we left the polling station together and a man in the lineup said, “you know how embarrassed you feel for having high fived a fist pump?  Bet you that kid is shaking his head at himself saying under his breath, ‘I just punched her in the hand.’”

There’s always another side of the story, right?  Here at Discovery we are hoping that tomorrow every Canadian participates in their side of the story, because it’s not everywhere in this world that voting is a right shared by all, is safe, is encouraged and is counted.

If there was an avocado election I’d vote for these stunning candidates!  We’ve got a container of FairTrade avocadoes arriving every couple of weeks or so and if you are willing to give us all of your avocado business, we are totally willing to lock in some volume pricing for you that will last the duration of the season barring unforeseen circumstance.  Let’s change the world with FairTrade avocadoes!


It is now my life’s goal to make the gold turnip a coveted vegetable.   It might be in every Hot Shots newsletter from now until the end of eternity, and you can think of it kind of like the garden gnome that travels around the world in the movie Amelie.  In the summer time I might even bring some gold turnips with me to my vacation destination and send hot shots from there.  Who knows, but you will know this veg.

Perfect purple bunched carrots from Ralph’s Greenhouse in Washington.  You can order these by the half case, you know, in case you can’t commit to a whole case of wacky carrots.  I wish I had taken a picture of what these look like when you chop ‘em.  Each sliver looks like a firework.

And this is what our green peppers from Sundance look like.  These are a value added product as they are geen bells ripening into a more expensive commodity: a pepper that actually tastes good.  So…’ll get a whole bunch of coloiured peppers at a green pepper price.  Pretty decent.



The Padron pepper, as described by Wikipedia: These are small peppers (about 5 cm long), with a color ranging from bright green to yellowish green, and occasionally red. Their peculiarity lies on the fact that, while their taste is usually mild, a minority (10-25%) are particularly hot. Whether a given pepper ends up being hot or mild depends on the amount of water and sunlight it receives during its growth, in addition to temperature.  The peppers are customarily fried in oil and served as tapas.[2]

So I have an idea, how about you try them and let us know which ones we’ve got in stock, the hot or the not hot ones.  Deal?

And our piece de resistance this week?  Siri & Sons bunch carrots.  Just look at ‘em.  Oh yeah, and they’re sweet too.  SUPER sweet.



Just like this guy, Curtis Mayfield, or just Mayfield for short, who works in the warehouse pulling YOUR orders and then goes to school and learns how to record music.  Pretty full on.  I just hid behind a door when Mayfield was trying to ask me something.  He said, “Come on, Ursula.  I thought you were cool.”  I yelled, “You thought wrong I guess!”

I’m laughing.  Oh gosh.  I’m laughing a lot right now.  Point is, this is Curtis one member of this crazy Dream Team of probably the loveliest people I’ve ever met or had the pleasure to work with.



Tomorrow, raise your fists, your hearts, your votes, your democracy.  We’re kinda used to trying to change the world, anyway, no?
