HOT SHOTS – MAY 15TH, 2016

Dear ones,

I have a strange landlord who is a constant reminder to me that there is no “type” of person.  He drives a giant truck; He listens to new country while he rides a stationary bicycle in the backyard, intermittently doing chinups; He asked me once if one is supposed to introduce women to groups of people, “I mean, I know you introduce a man, but I never know about women;” He’s into the ayurvedic oral hygiene practice of oil pulling, offers me a Corona everyday, and disputes that he’s actually truly a feminist in his heart, which I often let him know I believe he truly is because he’s also a really great dad to his girls for whom he wants this world to dissolve its female only hurdles.

HOT SHOTS – MAY 8TH, 2016

Dear Ones,
Last night I went to Casa Escobar for dinner.  Blanca was trying out one of her mother’s recipes, something whose name I don’t remember but was having to do with pork cooked in tomatoey goodness and then served with rice and tortillas and this delicious salsa that Blanca made by frying whole jalapenos in oil and then blending with a little bit of water, lime juice and salt.  Blanca is from Oaxaca.  She and Heather met they fell in love.  Last night I saw in their photo album, a photo both of their wedding, and also their first wedding, their symbolic wedding.

HOT SHOTS – MAY 1ST, 2016

Dear Ones

I made a list of ways to avoid falling hard for someone I sort of have to avoid falling hard for and the list goes like this: 1) wake up with the birds if there are birds, with the rain if there’s rain, with the sun if there’s sun, and before your alarm clock if that’s all you’ve got, 2) paint your toenails bright pink and remain barefoot in every occasion where that’s possible, 3) watch your monkey mind and steer it towards the sweet when it wanders away and towards the dreary, 4) eat breakfast.  never skip breakfast, 5) ride your bike with no hands, 6) water your garden at night, like really soak it, 6) and also, love that person.  Maybe don’t tell anyone anything about anything ever, but you can love whomever you want, as deeply as you can, and for as long as you like.

That’s how I like to be in this world, to move with love.  Shoot, I make my BED with love.

Dear ones,

How is our use of MailChimp working for you?  This is the first time I’ve done Hot Shots in this way, and honestly, I’m loving it.  It’s so pretty!  I get to choose colours!

HOT SHOTS – APR. 10TH, 2016

Dear Ones,

This week I’m trying a new thing which is contracting out my photos.  Jon is going to be doing the photos part of things, and I think this is a really great move on my part, because he did a really good job, especially the photos of artichokes!  So these photos are brought to you by our Jon.  Some neat things about Jon: he is a world class gamer and while I like to make fun of him for this, I am learning that he’s pretty legit in this world that I don’t really understand because I am old and boring and only like books.  Jon also loves books, and his little cat named Garbey, and only one person on this whole planet: his grandmother.  Jon’s favourite colour is black and he jokes that he doesn’t like the sun, but he does, I just know it.  He is deeply kind and very funny and we just love our Jon Jon Jon.

HOT SHOTS – APR. 3RD, 2016

Dear Ones,

IT’S SPRING!!!!  There are no two ways about it, winter is over.  This week I worked on a nice, even sunburn, and spent every spare moment on my pink bicycle riding under the cherry blossoms that make this city the most perfect city.  If you think about it, riding a bicycle is really the closest to flight you can really get.  You are speeding through the atmosphere, feet lifted and you are arching forward into the perfect sweet spring air, and even if you only lift a couple of inches, it’s flight.  I know how to fly.

This week the four year old who lives upstairs greeted me while I was reading in the sun.  She said, “Hi Ursula.  Why are you naked?”  And I said, “Hi Sequin, Why are you naked?”  She said, “I’M NOT NAKED!!!!”  And I said, “oh that’s funny, me neither.”  Four year olds are weird.  Four year olds are awesome.

And these are awesome!!!  BC HH red bell peppers!!!!  It’s real.  These are real.  It’s on…..

Dear Ones,

It’s Spring and Spring makes me think about Love.  Not love like ewey gooey romance love, but about Good Love, like seeds breaking open in the dirt Love, like lil baby animals rushing into the world Love, like the smell of sticky poplar buds riding the chilly but not cold morning breeze Love.  My friend Tess who stays with me for about one week a month and is like a sister to me came into my room this week where I was reading myself to sleep.  She said, “Are you sleeping.”

HOT SHOTS – MAR. 20TH, 2016

Dear Ones,

When I first moved to Nelson, I did it for “love” but it only lasted 22 days after which I found myself without my lil East Van apartment, without a job, and quite frankly, in what appeared to be the middle of nowhere, and I didn’t know anyone.  I made a friend called Tory and she took me blueberry picking.  I piled into a beat up vehicle with three young beautiful Kootenay women who also happened to be single moms and picked blueberries in Thrums.  After 5 hours I had made $27.  Tory had made $90.  I could see why she did it, wasn’t sure why I should.

HOT SHOTS – MAR 13TH, 2016

Dear Ones,

Again I’m sorry there were no Hot Shots last week.  I was sick again.  I thought I was dying because I had become very tired and also I had commenced not liking the other people on the planet.  I spent four days watching a terrible show on Netflix, which took two seasons to reveal itself as sexist to the core, taking breaks only to look at clogs that I need on the internet.  It is a stunning existence, really, one’s life when one is down and it feels like we’ve all been taken out at Disco, only we’ve been taking turns which is a good thing.

HOT SHOTS – FEB. 28TH, 2016

Dear Ones,

I’m sorry that there were no Hot Shots last week.  I was at home sick with big lumberjack socks on, all curled up on my little love seat which I’d made into a super cozy little nest, feeling VERY sorry for myself.  I was really enjoying feeling very sorry for myself until something started happening which made me swear up and down that I will NEVER stay home again on a Sunday.  I was all curled up with my Miriam Toews book and all of a sudden, there was the sound of voices, singing, and a piano, which in itself was fine, until it got louder and louder and louder.
