   Eatmore Sprouts Courtenay, BC
Eatmore Sprouts Eatmore Sprouts is one of B.C.'s best organic success stories. Now exporting to the U.S., Eatmore brand sprouts are found at most natural food stores and major grocery retailers across the west. Eatmore produces over 10 different sprout mixes from greenhouses in Courtenay on central Vancouver Island. Glen Wakeling is one of the principals of Eatmore Sprouts, and with his partner Carmen, has been harvesting alfalfa, sunflower, clover and broccoli sprouts (amongst others) for 15 years.

When we asked Glen why he was so dedicated to growing high-quality sprouts, his answer was very straightforward; "growing good food is very rewarding'. Most people are very aware that sprouted seeds are highly nutritious. Growing them year-round as an available food is only logical, as well as sustainable. Glen feels very strongly that with constant production, you are planting every day, harvesting every day, and creating a cycle of life. Eatmore operates on a very highly utilized 3 acres of land that also includes a salad mix operation and an intensive market garden farm operated by Greg Porteous. Greg supplies fresh salad, spinach, beets, leeks, onions and many other crops to local stores and retailers up and down the Island, and on the smaller islands, using the same distribution channels as Eatmore.

The sprout operation includes a composting system, and waste water lagoons utilizing wash and irrigation water from greenhouses. Greg utilizes finished compost from the sprout operation and seizes every opportunity to cover-crop with green manures like vetch, rye, peas and buckwheat to continually build the soil. His excellent crops and high production benefit from this attention to soil health.
