Twin Meadows Organic Farm, Heirloom and Horse Powered

We thought we would share this great photo we received from Garry Lowe at Twin Meadows Organics farm in McBride BC.

Garry and his wife Wendy devote their farm to sustainability and biodiversity, they grow only heirloom varieties of organic potatoes, garlic, grain and vegetables utilizing horse power from their team of Belgian horses. This shot, taken this week, shows Garry and the team seeding a field of heirloom grains. The horses can seed about 5 or 6 acres per day.

Garry and Wendy are strong advocates of heirloom varieties, and feel it in their guts that crops like Atomic Red carrots and Petrowski turnips are more than beautiful tributes to biodiversity, but also better for you too. They are participating in a study at UNBC that plans to examine the nutritional qualities of heirloom varieties.
